No one can stop Tremont

MALTA
One of the best seasons of Ken Tremont Jr.'s career got even better Friday night.

Tremont survived a late restart to win the CVRA.com 100 at Albany-Saratoga Speedway, extending his winning streak at the Malta track to three races. But what is even more impressive is that Tremont has now won four of the last five 100-lap features run at Albany-Saratoga Speedway. Friday night's victory was Tremont's fifth in a 100-lapper at the historic track – only Richie Evans and Eddie Flemke have as many wins in 100-lappers.

“We've been taking it one race at a time, and we are definitely on a roll,” said Tremont in victory lane after his fifth win of the season at Albany-Saratoga. “Now, I just hope we can keep it going.”

Tremont, who started 18th in the field, was on the charge early and took the lead for good on lap 33. One final caution made things interesting, as Vince Quenneville Jr. blew the rear end in his car with 10 laps to go, allowing Dave Camara and Matt DeLorenzo to pull up on Tremont's rear bumper. But that was as close as either one would get to Tremont in the final 10 laps.

Camara, who hasn't raced in the CVRA since late in the 2003 season when he left the circuit because of a disagreement with management, was subbing for Matt Sheppard in the Randy Ross-owned small block.

“My goal was to keep the car in one piece and get some points for Matt,” said Camara. “We only made a couple of changes to the car after the heat race from the way Matt runs it every week.”

Tremont also had to make some changes to his car following his heat, as he was involved in a minor wreck during his qualifying race.

“We had to change the front bumper, straighten out some sheet metal and things like that,” Tremont said. “But we all kept our heads.” The win also gave Tremont his first official three-race winning streak at Albany-Saratoga Speedway. He won three in a row in 1999, but had one of the wins taken away on a disqualification.

Although Camara did a great job in the Sheppard car, another fill-in driver didn't fare as well. Bobby Varin was substituting for Brett Hearn in the Vinny Salerno-owned small block, but Varin ran only 23 laps before retiring with engine problems.

Tremont, Camara and DeLorenzo occupied the top three spots at the finish, with A.J. Romano turning in a solid run to get fourth. Romano had to go to the rear of the field after getting caught up in a jingle on lap two. Jeff Trombley hit the finish line fifth, his second straight top-five finish.

Completing the top 10 were Don Ronca, Tony Kawalchuk, Jim Becker, Keith Flach and Marc Johnson.

Jimmy Davis was originally fifth, but was disqualified when he came up light on the scales after the race.

Jack Johnson, the winningest driver in the history of the speedway, looked like he was going to be a contender, moving to the front of the pack early in the Alton and Carole Palmer-owned 76A. But he retired with mechanical problems on lap 34.

The twin sportsman features saw two first-time winners, as rookie Rob Langevin picked up his first career win in the carried-over feature from the July 27 rainout, and Mike Ketchum made his way to victory lane for the first time in the John Kollar-owned small block in the second feature.

Langevin, who started fifth, took the lead on lap 15 in the first 25-lap feature and outran David Peek to get the victory.

Ketchum nosed out Tim Hartman to win the second feature. Hartman, the defending track champion who moved up to the 358 modified ranks this season, was subbing for Dustin Delaney, who was ill.

Two repeat winners emerged in the pro-street stock feature, as Kim Duell picked up his second straight win in the first feature, and Lori Cary drove to win No. 3 in the second event.

Jeff Washburn and Cary chased Duell across the finish line in the first feature, while Jimmy Eaton and Dan Madigan finished second and third, respectively, in the second race.

Tommy Primeau Jr. notched his first win of the season in the first limited feature, and Jim Monroe Jr. ended his victory drought in the second event. Monroe's win was his fifth of the season, but first since May 25.

Phil DeFiglio ran his winning streak to eight races in the six-cylinder mini-stock division while Brette Osgood got the win in the four-cylinder class.

Albany-Saratoga Speedway will be back in action on Friday, Aug. 10 for Black Flag Night. All divisions, including the budget sportsmen, will be in action.
